On May 9 we celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s a secular holiday, but the idea of honoring mothers (and fathers) did also make God’s top 10 list. So, it is appropriate to consider these three ways you can honor or remember your mother.
Make a gift in her honor or memory.
One of my favorite features of the Moravian Giving Portal is the option to make a gift in memory or honor of someone. Perhaps there is a Moravian congregation, agency, or field of interest that is or was special to your mother. Perhaps the people there know or remember your mother. It’s a great gift for the mother who already has everything or is unable to engage in other ways. One of the newest opportunities on the Giving Portal is the Prevention of Violence Against Women Field of Interest Fund. Your gift could help other women.
Establish a fund.
Set up a fund in honor or memory of your mother. The Moravian Ministries Foundation in America can help you establish many different kinds of funds that can honor your mother in perpetuity by providing a revenue stream now and/or making grants from remaining investments.
Give your time.
Help your mother articulate how she wants to be treated if and when she becomes unable to make decisions for herself. The Moravian Ministries Foundation in America provides Moravians with a free copy of Five Wishes, which can become a legally-recognized advanced directive in many states if signed and notarized. Use code MMFA2020 with this link to get your free copy. Your foundation can also provide a free copy of our Estate Planning Guide to help organize your mother’s thoughts for preparing or updating her will.
Honoring your mother on Mother’s Day does not need to cost a lot of money. While flowers and cards are always nice, these thoughtful alternative gift ideas are intimate, lasting, and memorable.
