Summer Truth

Posted by:

School is out and we are in the heat of summer. My kids love this time of year because, you guessed it, no school. All summer and nothing but swimming, video games, vacation, and plain fun. While kids live in that world, we adults often live in another. We think and worry about the economy, job security, mounting bills and Wall Street to Main Street issues. We have to analyze conflicts and stories on a daily basis. Increasingly, everyone has their own version of truth.

Pontius Pilate famously asked Christ, “What is truth?” This question still challenges us today, maybe more than ever. In 1997 a middle schooler named Nathan Zohner won first prize at the state science fair by showing how conditioned we have become to alarmists spreading fear. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical “dihydrogen monoxide” because:

  • It can cause excessive sweating and vomiting.
  • It is a major component in acid rain.
  • It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state.
  • Accidental inhalation can kill you.
  • It contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
  • It decreases the effectiveness of automobile brakes.
  • It is found in tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Nathan asked 50 people to support his ban. 43 said yes. Six were undecided. Only one knew the chemical was actually WATER…

We remember the martyrdom of Jan Hus on July 6. He famously said, “Seek the truth, listen to the truth, teach the truth, love the truth, abide by the truth and defend the truth unto death.” So, in an age of “fake news” and obfuscation, I pray we all work hard to discern and know truth.
